PUTTING STUDENTS FIRST

HEIDI'S PLATFORM

Keeping Our Kids Safe

  • I support a zero-tolerance policy for drugs and vaping on campus. We are seeing and hearing of students getting addicted to nicotine because they are introduced to vaping on our San Marcos Unified campuses. This is unacceptable and the district needs to take action to prevent these harmful substances from reaching our children.

  • In today’s challenging social-media environment, the mental health of our children and young adults is becoming increasingly concerning. The health and wellness or our students must be a top priority in our district and I support efforts to bring more resources to mental health support.

  • Lastly, we need to maintain an active and engaged relationship with local law enforcement that provide campus resource officers to our district. We need to make sure our facilities are modernized and equipped with safety measures such as surveillance and fencing.

Keeping Our Kids Learning

  • Maintaining low class sizes can have a tremendous impact on ensuring no student falls behind. We should always be striving for low student-teacher ratios so that our teachers can best serve all students in their classrooms.

  • I support limiting student cell phone use on campus & building more intentional behaviors around technology in general, so that our kids can learn in a distraction free environment.  Allowing unnecessary distractions  on our campuses is having significant impacts on mental health, academic achievement, and the social-emotional wellbeing of our students.

  • San Marcos Unified has made a mess of the dress code in recent years. While it is important to allow our kids to express themselves, we need to craft a dress code that promotes a focused learning environment, minimizes distractions, and ensures student safety. Clear guidelines help maintain a respectful atmosphere, conducive to academic and social development.

  • Lastly, we should always keep our eye on the key goal of our local schools, which is to prepare our students for successful and productive lives as adults. I support cultivating entrepreneurship and real-world life skills so that our kids are prepared to be competitive in the workforce and ready to lead sustainable careers and livelihoods.

Keeping Our Parents Involved

  • Encouraging parental involvement in school is crucial for student success and community building. Schools can foster this by creating welcoming environments for parents to come on campus to volunteer/meet with their principal & staff, and by providing clear communication channels so they are ‘in the know’ about about their child’s life at school.

  • Transparency is also key to maintaining positive parent-school relationships. I fully support transparency and parent communication in all facets of school operations and curriculum.

Keeping our Teachers Supported

  • Families move into SMUSD neighborhoods because our teachers have some of the best reputations in the county.  We need to ensure we are offering them the most competitive salaries we can afford, opportunities for professional development, and treating them with the level of autonomy and trust they’ve earned.
